Israel’s attack on Iran and the 12-day war that followed flooded radio stations, TV studios, and newspaper pages in Israel with a band of commentators who told the public exactly what it wanted to hear: that Israel’s attack was entirely legitimate; that Iran was only a step away from acquiring nuclear weapons; that the Israeli and American strikes set back Iran’s nuclear program by many years; and that the Iranian people support the Israeli attack as a means to help them overthrow the regime. 

As an Iranian-born Jew living in Israel and a close observer of local, Iranian, and international media, I knew full well that none of this was true.

One of +972 Magazine’s most vital roles is combating the distortions and disinformation propagated by the Israeli hasbara apparatus, often in collaboration with the media both in Israel and abroad. As Israel’s narrative around the war against Iran gained traction not only among the Israeli public but also among large parts of the international media, +972 rapidly and comprehensively dismantled those claims. Through interviews and analyses by people with deep and even intimate knowledge of Iran, we offered readers a significantly more complex picture.

For the past 21 months of Israel’s war of annihilation in Gaza, +972 has been working tirelessly to bring its readers the information, voices, and images that Israel seeks to hide from both its own public and the world. +972 works with a team of Palestinian journalists from Gaza who provide direct reports and testimonies from within the inferno. The series of investigative reports that we’ve published in partnership with Local Call on the mechanisms underpinning the destruction in Gaza have been cited around the world and have made a crucial contribution to exposing information that Israel is trying to conceal. At the same time, we have continued to provide ongoing coverage of the ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and the persecution of Palestinian citizens within Israel — processes that have intensified alarmingly under the cover of the genocide in Gaza — as well as amplifying the voices of Israelis who are resisting the war.

Furthermore, through the partnership between +972 Magazine and Local Call, we publish much of this crucial work in Hebrew, exposing the Israeli audience to what much of the mainstream Israeli media seeks to hide.

As I write these words, Israel is planning the construction of a massive concentration camp for the starving and exhausted survivors of the genocide in Gaza, on the ruins of Rafah. The obligation to resist Israel’s crimes has never been more acute. On  the front line of this struggle, accurate and reliable information is an essential tool.
