ALERT!
A highly disturbing anti-immigrant bill is moving quickly through the Ohio Statehouse --> SENATE PASSED yesterday 23-8 ! The bill now moves to the Ohio House of Representatives for consideration. It depends on when/if the house wants to take up next week, they could do a first hearing pending referral to committee (it would need to go through rules first). But if they wanted to move over the next two weeks, possible. As the budget is moving through conference, we need to monitor for possible inclusion in the budget bill as well. Brief Summary
SB 172 allows federal, state, or local law enforcement officers to arrest people with or without a warrant for nearly any reason if they claim itβs related to immigration.
MORE DETAIL β What this bill does:
************************************************************************************************************
The ACLU of Ohio has voiced strong opposition, arguing it grants broad authority to local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws without formal agreements with the federal government, according to the ACLU of Ohio. Democrats in the Senate have also criticized the bill, calling it "state-sponsored racial profiling." Other analysts have warned if it pass both houses and is signed into law by DeWine, OHIO will in effect become a POLICE STATE.
