CAIR-MA Condemns Harvard's Adoption of Anti-Speech Policy, Adds Harvard to Growing List of Hostile Campuses

The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned Harvard University for adopting as part of its antidiscrimination policies the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) highly controversial definition of antisemitism that conflates criticism of the Israeli government with religious discrimination.

In part due to this latest act, CAIR today designated Harvard University as a “Hostile Campus” for targeting anti-genocide protesters and creating a hostile environment by repressing free speech and academic freedoms on campus.

“If you want to learn about human rights, free speech, and critical thought, we suggest Harvard is not the place to go. Harvard leaders must be aware of the problematic nature of the IHRA definition, yet they went with it anyway, further dehumanizing anti-genocide and anti-apartheid voices,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor…

In a report released today, CAIR documented the different ways in which the administration at Harvard displayed apparent discrimination based on religion, race, and ethnicity by actively suppressing the free speech of Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, Jewish, and other students, staff, and faculty who oppose occupation and apartheid. According to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression's (FIRE) 2025 Free Speech College Rankings, Harvard University was ranked 251st, or last, compared to other top American colleges.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and CAIR Action, a leading national Muslim political advocacy organization, today released their collaborative legislative priorities for the 119th Congress. These priorities focus on defending civil rights, advancing justice, and addressing key domestic and international issues impacting the American Muslim community and other marginalized groups.

TAKE ACTION: URGE CONGRESS TO SHUT DOWN, NOT EXPAND GITMO

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“Expanding Guantánamo Bay by even one bed—let alone tens of thousands—continues the torture site’s dark legacy at a time when the prison should be closed for good. 

“The American people have long called for the closure of the Guantánamo Bay prison and reject any plan to expand it against any community. Hundreds of innocent Muslim men were falsely labeled the ‘worst of the worst’ and tortured at Guantanamo, where they were held for years without charge, trial, or any apology or restitution. Some still remain.

“We must not allow this dark chapter of injustice to be repeated. The U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay has been a legal ‘black hole’ where U.S. constitutional rights of due process disappear. Members of Congress should oppose this proposed expansion of the prison and make it clear that every person in U.S. custody, including undocumented immigrants, must be treated with dignity and receive due process.”

In a statement, CAIR said:

“Only an intense hatred for the Palestinian people could lead the White House to rush out this ridiculous and dehumanizing lie about $50 million for condoms in Gaza. Policies must be based on facts and truth, not on fantasies and falsehoods. Instead of expressing outrage about imaginary money for condoms in Gaza, the administration should express outrage about the billions in real American tax dollars wasted on the Israeli government's mass slaughter, destruction, ethnic cleansing, and forced starvation in Gaza. Amateur hour at the White House press office must end.”

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:  

"We welcome the news that the 11 medical professionals have safely left Gaza. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this sort of incident has happened; the Israeli government has a pattern of intimidating humanitarian and medical workers and putting their safety and lives at risk. 

"Our government is responsible for prioritizing the safety of its citizens, especially when their safety is at risk due to a foreign power. The complete inaction we've seen from both the Biden administration and the Trump administration to protect medical workers providing urgently needed care in Gaza is shameful and absolutely unacceptable."

“We welcome the sentence in this disturbing case and stand in solidarity with the Hispanic community of Iowa and all those targeted by bigotry,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No one deserves to be harassed at their homes and businesses on the basis of their ethnicity.”
