  This is what happens when you can put on the defense of necessity. In Britain you can explain at trial why you did what you did, and you can argue that the war crimes you wanted to stop were far more serious than your crime of vandalism or other resistance. In the U.S. for the most part that is not an option at trial. You can explain why you did what you did to the judge at the time of sentencing, but cannot explain it to a jury that will be asked to decide if your acts really outweighed the harm you were trying to stop from happening.
