In the midst of the Israeli government’s genocide of the Palestinian people, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that could criminalize protests criticizing Israel’s government. Why are my colleagues and the mainstream media more outraged over these anti-genocide protests than they are about the more than 35,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza with U.S. backing?

Rather than listen to their constituents who are asking to divest from human rights violations, too many lawmakers at the state and federal level have asked universities to crack down on peaceful protests.

But there are courageous lawmakers in office who are demanding an end to this genocide and defending human rights, including our right to protest. They need our support.

While in office, Zohran Kwame Mamdani led a hunger strike outside the White House demanding a permanent ceasefire and sponsored the Not On Our Dime Act to stop New York’s charities from funding Israeli settler violence. Instead of investing in violence, Zohran has won investments in better public transportation and much-needed debt relief for low-income and working people.

In Delaware, the first Muslim state representative Madinah Wilson-Anton just secured unanimous passage of her resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in the State House. And in Florida, Angie Nixon also introduced a ceasefire resolution, but faced demeaning attacks and bullying while trying to get her fellow legislators to see Palestinians’ humanity. None of them are backing down in saving lives.

In Florida, where a near-total abortion ban is in effect as of May 1, Angie Nixon is leading policies for reproductive justice, equitable healthcare, universal early childcare, and affordable housing.

This week, with ammunition and bombs paid for by our tax dollars, the Israeli apartheid regime began its long-telegraphed assault on Rafah in Gaza. Over 610,000 displaced children are trapped in Rafah, with nowhere else to go.

As our government is not just complicit but is actively participating in the genocide of the Palestinian people, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that could criminalize protesters who criticize the Israeli government.

Rather than listen to what the vast majority of their constituents are demanding, many lawmakers at the state and federal level have encouraged brutal crackdowns on peaceful anti-genocide protests—undermining our constitutional rights. In just the past few weeks, over 2,000 students and faculty have been arrested, and many have been hospitalized from police forces’ rubber bullets and beatings.

We need more elected leaders who defend our rights and who clearly denounce war crimes. I want to lift up these three brave elected officials who are leading the call for a permanent ceasefire:

The first Muslim state representative in Delaware, Madinah just secured unanimous passage of her resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in the State House.

Madinah recently led a state Muslim Capitol Day and a Muslim Advocacy Day in Washington, DC, where constituents asked Delaware’s Congressional Representative “to oppose all future military funding to Israel & to stand with student protestors who are peacefully calling for a #CeasefireNow.”

When Angie Nixon introduced a ceasefire resolution in Florida’s legislature, most of her colleagues stood up and physically turned their backs on her. She tried to get her fellow legislators to see Palestinians’ humanity, asking how many dead Palestinians would be enough in order to support a ceasefire. Another legislator shouted back: “all of them.”

In this hostile environment of dehumanization, Angie continues to work to ensure our communities can thrive and flourish.
