Israeli missiles hit a site in Iran, ABC News reports; airspace shut down above major Iranian cities

Israeli missiles have hit a site in Iran, ABC News reported late on Thursday, citing a U.S. official.

Over the weekend, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles in a retaliatory strike after a suspected Israeli strike on its embassy compound in Syria.

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported explosions near the airport in the city of Isfahan and that a military base had activated its anti-air defenses. There has still been no official Iranian response. Isfahan is considered a strategically important city and one that is host to several important sites, including military research and development sites, military bases. The nearby city of Natanz contains one of Iran's nuclear enrichment sites.

Commercial flights began diverting their routes early Friday morning over western Iran without explanation as one semiofficial news agency in the Islamic Republic claimed there had been "explosions" heard over the city of Isfahan.

Dubai-based carriers Emirates and FlyDubai began diverting around western Iran about 4:30 A.M. local time. They offered no explanation, though local warnings to aviators suggested the airspace may have been closed.

Unconfirmed reports from Iraq said that explosions had been heard in the Babil governorate.
