AREA ANTIWAR ACTIVISTS LAUNCH CAMPAIGN AGAINST WAR ON IRAN
Five grassroots peace and justice organizations across northwest Ohio have launched a campaign of opposition to intensified U.S. war threats against Iran. The Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition (NWOPC), Toledo Chapter Social Justice Committee of the Association of US Catholic Priests (AUSCP), People for Peace & Justice of Sandusky County, Tiffin Area Pax Christi, and Project Peace of Tiffin announced on Saturday their plans to expose and oppose the Trump Administration’s drift toward a hot military confrontation in the Middle East.
The groups’ first move will be an antiwar demonstration at the intersection of Central and Secor Avenues in Toledo beginning at 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, 2019. The sponsors encourage citizens to bring signs, banners and ideas to highlight the dangers of a new regional conflict.
“In the past two weeks, John Bolton, National Security Advisor, and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo have accused Iran and supposed proxies of drone-attacking oil tankers while producing no proof. They daily hurl fact-free insinuations and now are sending thousands of troops, naval vessels and B-52 bombers to the Middle East,” said Terry Lodge, a convenor of the NWOPC. “Late Friday, President Trump signed an emergency order to send more bombs and bullets to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, using the ruse of an emergency to bypass Congressional controls.”
“Congress recently showed resistance to the U.S. role in the Yemen humanitarian disaster, and we intend to build on that for congressional intervention to stop further buildup,” commented Josie Setzler of People for Peace & Justice. “War against Iran would quickly become a regional conflagration as well in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Saudi Arabia and would prompt military intervention by Israel and possibly China and Russia. This war tilt is very serious.”
“The President’s fake national emergency portends widespread civilian as well as military deaths, massive life disruptions and mayhem for millions,” observed Tom McDonald of AUSCP. “The antiwar effort in this country must quickly band together to head off disaster.”
