Israel, armed with US weapons, continues to escalate its aggression in a widening conflict in the Middle East. Israel’s genocide in Gaza continues, as does its violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, and now its invasion of Lebanon.

Fear of an even wider conflict with Iran, with the possibility of a nuclear confrontation, is closer to reality. Missile attacks between the two countries have already occurred. Now, the leak of Israeli military plans shows that the country is seriously considering a massive attack on Iranian oil reserves and possibly its nuclear program. Such an attack would set off a war engulfing the entire region and putting the US in the middle. 

Nuclear confrontation in the region is a serious possibility. Both Israel and Iran have capabilities that could set off massive destruction and loss of human life. Israel is already a nuclear-armed country, and experts believe Iran is a final step away from arming virtually unstoppable hypersonic missiles.

One person has the power to immediately draw down the escalation and prevent unthinkable tragedy. President Joe Biden must take a hard line with Israel. He must demand there is no further escalation with Iran and that Israel begin talking about longer-term peace in the region. Israel’s capabilities to continue its war in the region would be impossible without the continual military support of the United States. But Netanyahu has continually ignored US appeals to peace and has manipulated US politicians in supporting genocide.

I’m calling on you to intervene to stop a nuclear exchange, to begin massive humanitarian aid to Gaza, and to advocate for a lasting peace that respects all people in the region, recognizing the self-determination and human and political rights of the Palestinian people.
