In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces toward East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and revelation, and (God’s) messengers; to spend of your substance out of love for Him for your relatives, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who seek assistance, and for the freeing of human beings from bondage; to be steadfast in prayer and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts that you have made; and to be firm and patient in distress, in adversity, and throughout all times of peril...” The Holy Quran, 2:177

CAIR, Palestine Legal Welcome Federal Court Ruling Granting Students for Justice in Palestine at U of Md. Preliminary Injunction for Oct. 7 Interfaith Vigil

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Palestine Legal today welcomed a ruling by the United States District Court for the District of Maryland granting the Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Maryland (UMD SJP) request for a preliminary injunction to allow the group to host an interfaith vigil on October 7, 2024.

The court, which came following a hearing yesterday, ruled that the university’s revocation of the SJP reservation was “clearly neither viewpoint- nor content-neutral,” and that, “It came about for reasons that the Constitution simply does not countenance: fear of disruption, and anger of opponents.”

“We’re thrilled with the court’s decision. If the First Amendment didn’t protect students who seek to mourn a genocide and educate the public about it, then it’s meaningless,” said Gadeir Abbas, Deputy Litigation Director at CAIR. “Universities that have harassed and punished advocates for Palestine across the country should take note.”

“Criticizing Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza is protected by the First Amendment, period.” said Tori Porell, staff attorney at Palestine Legal. “This ruling is not just a win for Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Maryland, but for all students speaking out for Palestinian freedom across the country.”

CAIR Calls on Biden to Fire 'Shadow President' Brett McGurk and Other Failed Foreign Policy Advisers

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President Biden to fire “shadow president” administration official Brett McGurk and other "notoriously orientalist and consistently wrong" foreign policy advisers who have undermined President Biden's public calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza while pursuing their own "deadly and delusional vision" of a Middle East permanently remade to the benefit of the Israeli government.

Since last week, the Israeli government has killed more than 1,000 Lebanese civilians and displaced over a million people.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“President Biden's Middle East foreign policy has been a disaster, partly because he has surrounded himself with notoriously orientalist and consistently wrong advisers like Bush administration veteran Brett McGurk, a wannabe Lawrence of Arabia who is obsessed with entrenching Arab dictatorships and sidelining the Palestinian cause in the Middle East, all for the benefit of the Israeli government, whose war crimes he privately justifies…"

CAIR Says Oxfam, AOAV Analysis of Israel’s Mass Killing of Palestinian Women and Children Should Be ‘Wake-Up Call’ to World

“The mass killing of women and children by the far-right Israeli government, carried out with the complicity of the Biden administration, should be a wake-up call to the international community as the world witnesses the ongoing genocide in Gaza, yet takes no concrete actions to protect civilians in Gaza or now Lebanon,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

In a statement, CAIR-Pittsburgh Executive Director Christine Mohamed said:

“We commend Charleroi officials for their swift response and urge community members to stay vigilant against such dangerous rhetoric. It is essential that we stand united in rejecting hate, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring that everyone feels safe and respected in our community."
