The Arab America Foundation is excited to announce Dr. James Zogby as a speaker at the CONNECT Arab America: Empowerment Summit, which will be held on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Dearborn Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan 48126. 


James Zogby co-founded the Arab American Institute (AAI) in 1985, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that serves as the political and policy research arm of the Arab American community and continues to lead it as president. As Director of Zogby Research Services, he has conducted groundbreaking surveys across the Middle East, offering insights into the region's public opinion. President Obama appointed Dr. Zogby to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom in 2013. He served two terms, including as Vice Chair. 


A prominent voice on Middle East affairs, he frequently appears in national and international media and has written a weekly column since 1992, published in 12 countries. His books, including Arab Voices and The Tumultuous Decade, have been widely acclaimed for their Middle Eastern public opinion analysis. Active in U.S. politics, Dr. Zogby has advised several presidential campaigns and served in leadership roles within the Democratic National Committee for over three decades.


Dr. Zogby will lead a panel discussion on the upcoming presidential election.

Pathbreakers of Arab America—Najee Mondalek

This is the fifty-seventh of Arab America’s series on American pathbreakers of Arab descent. The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, journalism, and politics, among other areas. Arab America contributing writer, John Mason, highlights pathbreaker Najee Mondalek, a Lebanese American actor who founded AJYAL Theatrical group. Mondalek has been named the Jerry Seinfeld of Arab-American culture for such roles as Im Hussein and such plays as “Arab and Broud.” The everyday lives of Arab Americans are the focus of AJYAL, including their mistakes and mishaps. Najee fell into the role of Im Hussein by accident, as we’ll see.

Karimeh Abbud: The First Palestinian Lady Photographer

Karimeh Abbud, born in Bethlehem in 1893, made history as Palestine’s first professional female photographer. Her work, encompassing personal portraits and stunning landscapes, offers a rare visual record of daily life and prominent landmarks in early twentieth-century Palestine. Decades later, her recently discovered photographs inadvertently challenge the “land without people” claim, serving as compelling evidence of Palestine's thriving communities. The Pasha of Marrakech

Pasha of Marrakech refers to a municipal governor or ruler in Marrakech, Morocco's political, cultural, and economic hub. The title "Pasha" was used throughout the Ottoman Empire and across the Muslim world, particularly Morocco, to refer to a high-ranking official or governor. The Pasha wielded considerable power in Marrakech and its surroundings, especially under the Alaouite monarchy and the French Protectorate. Aristotle and Islamic Philosophy

Aristotle was very influential in the discipline of Islamic philosophy, which reached its height during the Abbasid period. Halawet El Jibn- Sweet Syrian Cheese Rolls

It all began in the 1870s with a sweets vendor in Hama Syria. The patriarch of the Salloura family figured out a way to make sweet cheese pancakes rolled around sweet cream, called Halawet El Jibn, which in Arabic means “sweetness of the cheese.” Arab America contributing writer, Blanche Shaheen, is excited to share this original recipe with you. You too can now whip up a batch of this delicacy with surprisingly easy to find ingredients.
