My heart is so tired of hurting for the students brave enough to take a stand and unlucky enough to live in this time of brutality. But, I have a heart, which is more than I can say for our current administration and all those police departments that take their cues from it.

To be grabbed and beaten by police after delivering a public comment at a board meeting is beyond the pale. We would be screaming about this if it happened in another country. Let's use our imaginations.

And concerning Wayne State's use of the chemical weapon called tear gas to rouse protesters from tents, we should remember it is not harmless. Wikipedia cites research that reports the following:

Exposure to tear gas agents may produce numerous short-term and long-term health effects, including development of respiratory illnesses, severe eye injuries and diseases (such as traumatic optic neuropathy, keratitis, glaucoma, and cataracts), dermatitis, damage of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems, and death, especially in cases with exposure to high concentrations of tear gas or application of the tear gases in enclosed spaces.

Subject: [DCOH Announcements] Fwd: Demonstration Today: Hand Off WSU Students

Six months ago Wayne State Students began asking the Board of Governors to place on the agenda for discussion a proposal to divest their investments in any company engaged with the Israeli military due to the massive killing in Gaza. The Board repeatedly ignored them.
So they sent notice that they would attend the April 26 Board meeting and make public comment, which they did. After their comments, plainclothes police in the audience stood up, grabbed the students, dragged them into a hallway and beat them!
That is when they organized an encampment. Last Thursday at 5 am police arrived in riot gear to evict the handful of students there. They were given 10 minutes to leave, but were teargassed after 8 minutes. Students who left were followed and arrested. The campus was taped off and no entry by anyone was allowed. Now the Board is holding its next meeting in Grand Rapids! In my five years at WSU there was never an off-campus meeting.
WSU is raising the prospect of only holding on-line classes this summer, clearly an inferior mode of education. All to suppress student organizing and student voices on the war question. The faculty and staff are outraged that brutal police-state tactics are being arrogantly employed at WSU. So here is an announcement that I just got. FYI
