On Sunday, January 8, friends and members of the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition will be holding a demonstration decrying the 15th anniversary of the opening of the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Please join us noon at the corner of Secor and Central in Toledo to urge president Obama to fulfill his campaign promises and close the illegal prison before he leaves office.
January 11, 2017, will mark the 15th anniversary of the indefinite detention and obscene torturing practices at the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison. Guantanamo Bay is a huge black mark on the history of the US. Too many innocent men have been captured, wrongly detained, tortured and robbed of their basic humanity. There are currently 59 men detained in Gitmo, 21 of whom have been cleared for release. Seven of the 21 have been waiting to be freed for six years. Twenty eight prisoners are detained indefinitely, "forever prisoners" of the "forever war."
Witness Against Torture, CODEPINK, Amnesty International USA, National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms, Center for constitutional rights, and many others, will rally together at the White house, Washington, DC on January 11th, to demand the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison and the immediate end of the indefinie detention. The NWOPC is one of many organizations holding demonstrations and vigils to stand in solidarity nationwide.
Guantanamo undermines America's values and harms its national security. President Obama promised to close Gitmo on his second day in office in Jan 2009. His failure to close it will tarnish his legacy.
