Subject: Join Physicians in Toledo on June 4 to End Animal Labs
Dear Mrs. Kobee,
Please join me and Physicians Committee supporters on Thursday, June
4, in Toledo to help stop the use of live animals in the emergency
medicine residency program at the University of Toledo.
Physicians Committee staff and supporters have repeatedly asked the
University of Toledo College of Medicine (UTCOM) to end its animal
use. However, the school's decision-makers have yet to switch to
simulation. The majority of emergency medicine residencies use
superior training methods that do not harm or kill animals. Help us
urge the school to modernize its emergency training by using
human-based methods - because Toledo deserves better.
Join us for a physician-led demonstration at the University of Toledo
College of Medicine on June 4!

within driving distance of Toledo, and ask them to join you at the
demonstration.
At UTCOM, residents are instructed to make incisions into the throat
of a live pig
and insert a breathing tube, insert needles into the chest and bones,
and split open the breastbone in order to access the heart. At the end
of each session, the animals who survive the procedures are killed.
The university uses 125 pigs per year in its Emergency Skills
laboratory to train residents and various emergency personnel.
Nonanimal training methods are widely used by emergency medicine
residencies across the country, making this use of animals both
educationally and ethically inferior.
I hope to see you at the demonstration! If you have any questions,
please contact
me at ckauffman@PROTECTED or 202-527-7307.
