Across our
country young lives are being lost and shattered, far too often, by
increasingly militarized police forces. Our youth are being criminalized and
murdered by a system that does not provide healthy, suitable and productive
paths for successful and constructive participation in a functioning society based
on principles of justice founded in love and respect for all creation.
Racial profiling
and discrimination by police is running rampant in our communities. This past
summer, the gunning down of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and subsequent
outcry, has brought many of these issues to the forefront of the national
discussion. A similar case in Beavercreek, Ohio, where a young man named John
Crawford was gunned down by police in a Walmart
store, and the ongoing outcry about his senseless murder at the hands of
police, is also leading to a national and international discussion about these
deep seeded injustices in American society.
We invite all of the Toledo community to join us in a
public forum and discussion to show our loving support for the families and
communities that have been affected by the deaths of these young men and others
that have suffered from these types of injustice across the country. We will be
sending letters of support to the families of these victims from our Toledo
community. We will also discuss strategies to allow our young people to
flourish here in Toledo, working toward a community where equality and justice
are truly a part of the social fabric for everyone and where all lives matter.
“If
we are going to build a successful movement to resist systemic violence
and oppression, we need to start in our own communities and build the lasting
ties that are the foundations of grassroots strength and independence.”
